He is her most dangerous temptation and now he is demanding her submission. Dare she take the risk?

Book one in the Regency Risks Series

Emotionally scarred in the horrific accident that took her husband's life, Lady Cranfield is imprisoned by her lingering terror of horses and carriages. She longed to be closer to the fascinating Earl of Ruel. She sensed intuitively that he could teach her how to overcome the terrors that held her in bondage.

And now she's willing to risk almost anything-her reputation, even her virtue-to find out. But what he proposes startles her.

When the shy, studious and socially awkward young widow approached him, Ruel instantly sensed she would be the sweetest, most submissive experience of a lifetime-if only he can gain her total and complete trust. He makes her a non-negotiable offer. His help in return for her submission and obedience.

But Lady Cranfield grew up neglected by her ducal parents, raised by servants and then later ignored by her handsome, charming husband. She's learnt to protect her heart at all costs and she trusts no one but herself.

How can the jaded Earl of Ruel break through her self-protective defences and show her how to love when he has spent his lifetime avoiding that tender trap?

Interview with Natasha Blackthorne

Can you tell us a little about your book?
Hello Gia and Tabitha, thank you so much for hosting me here tonight at Amazeballs Book Addicts. I am so thrilled to be here.

I'd like to talk about my Erotic Regency Romance, A Measured Risk, Regency Risks Book One. It features a rubenesque heroine and contains elements of light BDSM and D/s presented in a historical context. (It is not meant to be an accurate portrayal of a modern BDSM lifestyle.)

Lady Cranfield is a shy, self-protective person. She was neglected in her childhood, raised by servants on a remote Irish estate while her parents resided in Mayfair, London. She’s learnt that people cannot be trusted. She’s not comfortable with emotion. She prefers books and theories. She isn’t the typical English Regency miss. Her priorities and perspectives are different. She has no use for society life and much prefers her library.  She never really completely understood all the rules and rituals.

At the start of the story, she’s imprisoned by fear. This trauma developed after her husband was mauled to death by the carriage horses in an accident. He released his last breath in the circle of her trembling arms. She barely survived and since then has been crippled by her newfound terror of both horses and carriages.

When her late husband’s cousin, the new earl, comes home for the hunting season, she suddenly finds her private world invaded by a loud, fast, fashionable crowd that pushes the limits of what is considered scandalous. And she’s relegated to the position of an unwanted relic. She’s about to meet Jonathon Lloyd, the fascinating, virile, brave Earl of Ruel. He’s about to show her a whole new word of wickedly sensual experiences, both in bed and out, that she never dreamed existed. In return, he wants something that she never expected, her complete submission. Is she willing to take the risk?

What was your favorite chapter (or part) to write?
I never really have favorite parts of any story. I only write scenes that come to me strongly and that I have deep feeling for. If I don't get a deep enough feeling for a scene then I begin to suspect that scene is not important enough to be shown in real time in the story and I try to find a way to cut or condense it. So at the moment I am writing any scene in a story, that scene is my favorite scene.

One scene I think is pivotal in A Measured Risk is when shy Anne forces herself to approach the sexy, sophisticated and somewhat sardonic Earl of Ruel. When she first approaches him, she’s so unsure of many things. She doesn’t know if he’s truly interested in her or if he merely intends to toy with her for his amusement. He’s experienced and older than she is. She’s completely intimidated by him and yet she forces herself to be brave and to send him a flirtatious overture with her fan. A clear signal that she’s interested in being alone with him.

Then he accepts and everything becomes real. Has she asked for more than she’s prepared to handle? The scene requires much bravery from her. She must accept all the uncertainty and being in a situation where she really has no experience or skills to guide her. She has to push herself and figure out on the fly what is need from her to meet the demands of the moment. It is the start of her growth and change in the story.

  Who designs your covers?
Most of my covers have been designed by the talented artists at The Killion Group.

Do you have a favorite spot to write?
We’re cramped for space at the present time. I have a corner of the living room set up as my office. I have two desks there, bookshelves (I have a ton of books, mostly history non-fiction and writing craft) and I also have a recliner there so I can write on my laptop in the afternoons. My cat is elderly and pretty frail now and she needs a lot of space to stretch out her achy bones. She doesn't want to try and get near me in the recliner any more. I usually take my laptop to bed in the evenings so she has plenty of room to curl up next to me while I write.

Do you have any book trailers for your books?  If yes can you share them with us?
I don't have any book trailers.

Do you prefer to write series and standalones?
I don't have a preference for one or the other. It just depends on what stories come to me the strongest. In the past, as a new author, I have in the past been most interested in writing a couple’s story in two books.

The first book would tell the story of how they became attracted to each other and became aware that they were falling in love. It would go deeply into how they overcame their initial conflicts to discover that they wanted to make a commitment to each other. Book one would end with them having made that commitment, usually an engagement.

The second book would cover how the couple moved from being newly in love to overcoming their deeper, more hidden conflicts so that they could learn to give each other what was most needed in a marriage. How do people learn to truly love each other? That's a question that interests me very much.

Will I continue to write love stories in two parts like that in the future? I am not sure. For the present, I am changing my pattern. The next series I am working on is called Intimate Secrets and it will feature standalone novels that are linked together by theme. The stories will feature characters who are driven by inner conflicts centered around secrets from their past.

When did you know you wanted to write a book? I have been creating stories in my mind for as long as I can remember. As soon as I learned how to draw, I started trying to capture the stories that came to me. Then later when I learned how to write, I started keeping little notebooks. Capturing the stories was always a driving need, there was never a time I thought for the first time, "I want to be a writer."

For most of my life, I was simply recording the stories because the internal pressure to capture the stories was so strong. It was just part of my private, inner life. I didn't see myself as a serious writer. Then around 2007 I felt a strong need to become serious about my writing. I began to spend all my spare time studying writing craft and applying what I learned in my practice novels.

In 2010, I received two particularly strong story ideas, which became Grey’s Lady and A Measured Risk. By the spring of 2011, I felt ready to make my first submission to a e-publisher and that book was the novella titled Grey's Lady, which was published by Total-e-Bound (Now known as Totally Bound) in August 2011. Waltz of Seduction was my second submission which actually became my debut novella and it was published by Ellora's Cave in May 2011. I am currently a self-publishing author and plan to remain one for the foreseeable future.

What was the last book you read?
I haven’t had much time lately for pleasure reading. I have been focused on historical research in preparation for several projects I have planned for the next couple of years. These projects will require a more solid grounding in a slightly different time period and location than the stories I have worked on in the past three years.

Are you attending any author signing events this year?
No

What are writing projects are you currently working on?
I am currently working on an erotic historical romance that features a rubenesque heroine and will contain aspects of light bondage and sensual domination. The title is The Delicate Matter of Lady Blayne.

This story is highly erotic and contains a slightly non-traditional subject matter, sexual shame and a different kind of heartbreak than most historicals. It explores how love can be felt in different ways for different people and how love can be a destructive force for the lover. Many of my stories explore how lovers may find ways to help each other discover and accept their deepest natures and heal sexual and emotional shame. This is the core theme of The Delicate Matter of Lady Blayne.

The Regency was a time of changing sexual attitudes from the pleasure-loving Georgian era to the more complex and rigid Victorian era. The aspect of uncertainty, anxiety and change in the Regency is something that interests me. It is the subconscious underside to the time period that has fascinated me the most. I like exploring that which people wanted to keep hidden. Yes, the Regency is outwardly a time of many gala balls and marriage and manners – all very polite and proper. Regency people were deeply concerned with their reputations and social images. However, that’s an example of how people *wanted* to be seen.

What happened behind closed doors?

What secret thoughts and fantasies lived in the minds and hearts of historical people?

There’s always a gap between how people want to be seen and the deeper emotional and psychological aspects that really drive their actions or hold them back. That’s what makes writing historical exciting for me. I love to get into the deeper aspects of any time and attempt to feel and experience what life might have been like for someone whose nature made it hard for them to fit in with the standards imposed on them by society.

My heroines are never perfect ladies and Lady Blayne is a very human character. I like to write flawed characters and to create stories with plenty of drama and angst. At the same time, I work hard at creating love stories that are sensual, erotic yet equally emotional and romantic and this is what I have attempted to craft with The Delicate Matter of Lady Blayne. I expect to release this story in late February.
